How do you play Flip It?
Game Setup
Each player gets a set of Play Cards & a set of Guess Cards. For three players, remove Guess Cards 16-20 from each Guess Card set; for two players, remove Guess Cards 11-20 from each Guess Card set.
Game Play
The game is played in hands in which a hand total is determined by the values of Play Cards flipped over by the players. A winner is determined based on how close a pre-selected Guess Card is to the hand total. At the beginning of the hand, each player considers what the hand total might be, selects a Guess Card of that value & sets it aside. Each player then selects a Play Card gauged to make the hand total equal to the Player’s selected Guess Card (Pass card counts as zero). One or all players say “Flip it,” & all players flip their Guess Cards over simultaneously, though players can vary flip timing for more suspense. Once all Play Cards are flipped, their values are added to get the hand total, & the Guess Cards are revealed simultaneously, though players can vary this for more suspense, too. If a player’s Guess Card is equal to the hand total, the player wins the hand. If no one has guessed the hand total, no one wins the hand. If more than one player has guessed the hand total, each sets his or her wining card in his or her “win” pile.
Basic scoring in Flip It™
Hand winners keep winning Guess Cards in their “win” piles, each card counting as a point, playing to a goal. Examples of goals include a particular score or playing until all of a player’s Guess Cards are gone. Bonus points for rarer hand totals are indicated by spots on the faces of some Guess Cards: 0 has three spots, 1 has two, and 2 has one. If a hand is won with one of these cards, the card is worth one plus the number of spots (0 worth 4, 1 worth 3, etc.). This is also done for the high cards, but changes with the number of players. The 8-10 cards, 13-15 cards, & 18-20 cards have one, two, & three spots with “(2),” “(3),” & “(4)” to indicate that the spots apply when that number of players are playing (three players means the 15 is worth 4), etc.).
Example
Three players start a game, having removed Guess Cards 16-20 from each of their Guess Card decks. Based on what each player knows of the other players and of the odds, Player 1 selects her Guess Card 10, Player 2 selects his Guess Card 13, and Player 3 selects her Guess Card 11, each Guess Card representing the total the player thinks will be reached. Each player then picks a Play Card to be flipped: Player 1 picks 4, Player 2 picks 5, and Player 3 picks 4. The players say “Flip It” when ready, flip their Play Cards over, and the hand total is 4 + 5 + 4 = 13, meaning Player 2 is the winner of the hand. Player 2 takes his opponents guess cards away to put in his “win” pile for two points (plus one bonus point) for guessing the correct total. Then Player 2 returns his Guess Card back to his Guess card hand and the next hand is played. This gives the winner of the hand an advantage by reducing his opponents Guess options.
